July 4th Dress: Navid Yavari wrote: “This is a picture of my daughter
on the 4th of July. We were on vacation in Destin, Florida, and I took
this shot of her before the fireworks started.” Yavari used a
Canon D60 with a Canon 28-70mm f/2.8 zoom lens to make this great image
of Shana Yavari.

Spring in America: Randy C. Finch wrote: “I was building a web
site for the school (where my wife is a teacher and my son is a student)
and needed some additional photos. This photo stood out as a winner
even though it didn’t actually picture the school building.”
Finch used a Kodak DC4800 zoom digital camera at 17.7mm (82.5mm equivalent)
and exposed at f/9.5 at 1/500 sec.

The Coast of Maine: Drea Koval braved the icy winds of winter to make
this beautifully lit shot of Nubble Light in York, Maine. Wrote Koval,
“Every season at Nubble Lighthouse is beautiful, but I think the
winter storm season is the best—cold(!!), but great!”

Arizona Highway:
Tina Wright made this image of cholla cactus with Arizona Highway 88
in the background in the Superstition Wilderness Area. She used a Nikon
F4s with a Sigma 17-35mm lens mounted on a Bogen tripod with an exposure
of 1/30 sec at f/22 on Kodak E100VS film.

The Hills of North Carolina: Steve DeLorenzo made this color rich shot
of Chimney Rock, North Carolina, with a Minolta 800si on Fujichrome Velvia
ISO 50 film. He then scanned the slide with a Nikon LS2000 and sent us
this Epson Photo Glossy Premium print.

Mountain Valley: Wrote Bruce Gay, “This picture was taken in Swan
Valley, Idaho…It was one of those moments where you see a picture
and know you need to stop the car, compose and take it!” We agree.
Gay used a Canon EOS-3 with a 28-135mm USM IS lens on Fuji Superia 100
film. Exposure was f/16 at 1/15 sec. Gay used a polarizer and said he
switched on image stabilization to ensure a steady shot handheld at this
slow shutter speed.

Pacific Sunset: Cynthia Lee Katona titles this photograph: “Man,
Dog, Pacific” and that says it all. She shot with an Olympus OM2n
with a 35-70mm zoom lens on Ektachrome 200 slide film. We took the liberty
of cropping this to a panoramic framing.

Our 50th State: Peter S. Storozuk made this shot while driving up the
Pali Highway in Olomuna, Oahu, Hawaii. Wrote Storozuk, “I noticed
Mount Olomuna coming out of the clouds so I went off into the woods and
took this shot.” He photographed with a Canon EOS A2 and Canon 24-85mm
lens on Fujichrome Velvia 50.

Our Next Assignment
Group Portraits
Ever since photography began
people have been lining up, or have been posed, in the classic group portrait.
But these images tell us more than just a recording of faces in places—they
speak of the times and the social interaction among family, friends, and
often odd groups of people assembled for some event. This tintype is from
the 19th century and the people are posed in the classic triangle. The
photo was made, no doubt, in some summer resort, perhaps by an itinerant
photographer who would set up for the season and then be on the road again.
Please Read This
It is important that you read and follow these guidelines. We need to
follow this procedure because of the large volume of images we receive.
1) Images sent to us cannot be returned. You retain complete copyright
over the
images, but do grant us permission to print your image(s) in the magazine
and on our
web site, www.shutterbug.net
2) Because images are not returned please send a quality print or duplicate
transparency. We will not accept or view images on CD, ZIP, or any other
electronic media.
3) Images will be selected on the basis of content and technical quality.
Please mark your outer envelope with the topic of the month (for example,
“Wide View”).
4) Enclose a short caption with the image stating camera, lens, film and
exposure, plus location. If you are submitting an image with a recognizable
person we must have a model release or signed permission from that person
to reproduce their image in the magazine and on the web site.
